Research Interests
I am interested in understanding how reproduction at the cellular and organismal levels evolves in response to natural and sexual selection. My most recent project with undergraduate students used Callosobruchus maculatus, a seed beetle, because this species has a short generation time and lends itself well to the utilization of experimental evolution techniques. We investigated how reproductive behaviors, sperm morphology, and male genital structure may evolve in response to no male competition (monogamy) and intense male competition (polyandry).  Currently, I have projects at the University of Iowa that examine the genetic and cellular mechanisms behind the evolution of polyploidy and asexuality.
